In 5 days, 50 will turn 22 months. She’s getting closer and closer to the completion of her second year of life, and the long awaited chain of major changes in her levels of attention an communication seems to be finally at hand. During the past week, she made lots of what we could call "progresses", slowly accepting a little more interaction with her P.I.P.s every day, which led her to learn several new words and gestures.
She does not speak a meaning word yet, excluding the monosyllable "No" - which she accompanies with a strong shaking of her head in sign of denial, that's why we're sure about the meaning. - However, the new "indicating" feature she's recently added to her evolving character, which led her to point at almost everything around her with her chubby little second finger, has been coming handy when it comes to ask her : "Baby, where is mom?." The answer comes swiftly and smiley as she indicates her M.I.P.. Moreover, the answer is greeted by a long loud applause by both P.I.P.s and herself. Actually, she likes it so much she starts to applaud alone just after she gave the answer, waiting for us to join and compliment her. Fully excited by the progress, we've been adding words to the game so that she can now correctly point at several people and objects. We know she knows the words: mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, both dog's names, brother, glass, bottle, water, bread and fork (practically everything she can check on the table plus her family).
She perfectly identifies her brother by his name, she understands when it's time to go to bed and she's starting to refuse to leave the "grown-ups area" when the time comes and, last but not least, she has a clear concept of "absence". Approximately like a 3-tear-old dog (as to say, a fully grown specimen), she is able to determine whether something or someone is present or not. We taught her to lift both her hands up when we ask her of something she cannot see around, so now, whenever she can't see what we're asking her about or simply when she's doubtful about the answer to give, that gesture's become her answer. As mentioned, during the past week, she's proven to be extremely smart and, unexpectedly, eager to communicate with her P.I.P.s much more than during the past year. Something's definitely triggered inside her, because she now wants us to know her world is expanding and she needs us to help her through it. Believe it or not, she's been making loads of progresses without uttering a single word...and that's definitely amazing!
As for little brother Baby2, the boy's definitely different from his sister. At six and a half months of age, his need to communicate and to be in the centre of your attention is huge. He loves to be kissed and cuddled -he smiles all the time he's lifted or embraced, while his sister didn't use to.- Plus, he's eager to discover as much as possible about the world around him so, opposite to his sister at his age, and probably due to the hard time he's been having in trying to lift up his head autonomously - it's hard for him to understand that being that big is not exactly an advantage in overcoming slow motion - he's been focusing a lot on his eye-hand coordination. He's perfectly able to grab, hold and manipulate any object close enough to him, better if soft and coloured. He loves any hanging toy you put in front of him and can spend a full afternoon trying to reach for his feet to munch them. 50 developed such abilities much later.
On the other hand, she was much more independent at his age, watched her favourite cartoons selecting them carefully and seemed to be interested only in dominating the TV remote, which probably evolved into her present interest for pc's, phones and hardware in general. Just today, though, the boy's proven to be able to keep his head lifted at will, and turn it on both sides when called - he perfectly responds to his name.
Eventually, the only things they seem to have in common is a true passion for food, sweating like little pigs, and physically growing extremely big and fast. They look like little titans compared to their same age but this does not bother me at all, except when it comes to pulling their strolls for miles every day, which is currently happening being our house at the seaside pretty far from the beach. Never mind, though, I take it as a chance to get back in shape sooner - if I survive the hot, of course.
Tra 5 giorni, 50 avrà 22 mesi. Si sta avvicinando rapidamente al compimento del suo secondo anno di vita e la lungo attesa catena di cambiamenti epocali nei suoi livelli di attenzione e comunicazione sembra essere finalmente a portata di mano. Nel corso della settimana passata, ha fatto molti di quelli che chiamerei "progressi", accettando lentamente un po’ più di interazione con i suoi P.I.P. ogni giorno, il che le ha permesso di apprendere parecchie parole e gesti nuovi.
Non che pronunci ancora una singola parola di senso compiuto, eccezion fatta per il monosillabo “No” (che accompagna con un vigoroso scuotere del capo in segno di negazione, per quello sappiamo con certezza che il significato è pienamente compreso). Tuttavia, la nuova moda dell’ “indicare” adottata di recente, con la quale si è risolta a puntare il piccolo indice ciccioso a praticamente qualsiasi cosa la circondi, si è rivelata provvidenziale allorché le si chiede: “Tesoro, dov’è la mamma?”. La risposta arriva rapida e sorridente e l’indice punta la M.I .P. presente. Inoltre, è accompagnata da un lungo e chiassoso applauso sia dai P.I.P. che dalla bimba stessa, che pare averci preso gusto, al punto che, appena data la risposta, si applaude da sola e si aspetta che noi le facciamo eco e ci congratuliamo. In preda all’eccitazione del momento, abbiamo aggiunto progressivamente altre parole al gioco, cosicché attualmente la bimba è in grado di indicare svariate persone e oggetti. Sappiamo quindi che ha ben chiaro il significato delle parole: mamma, papà, entrambi i nomi propri dei cani, fratello, bicchiere, bottiglia, acqua, pane e forchetta (cioè tutto quel che riesce ad identificare in tavola più la sua famiglia).
E’ in grado di distinguere suo fratello dal nome, capisce quando è ora di andare a letto, e comincia a ribellarsi all’idea di dover abbandonare la “zona degli adulti” quando arriva il momento e, dulcis in fundo, ha ben chiaro il concetto di “assente”. Più o meno come un cane di tre anni (ovvero un esemplare adulto), è in grado di discernere se qualcuno o qualcosa è presente, o meno. Le abbiamo insegnato a sollevare ambo i palmi della mani verso l’alto se le chiediamo di dirci dov'è qualcosa che non vede. Perciò, adesso, nel rispondere di qualcosa che non identifica o semplicemente nell’esprimere un dubbio sulla domanda posta, la sua risposta è quella. Come anticipato, nel corso della settimana passata si è dimostrata estremamente sveglia e, inaspettatamente, desiderosa di comunicare con i suoi P.I.P. molto più che nell’intero anno trascorso. Qualcosa deve essere decisamente scattato dentro di lei perché, ora, desidera farci sapere che il suo mondo si sta ampliando e che l’aiutiamo a conoscerlo. Ci si creda o no, è riuscita a progredire in modo massivo senza spiccicare una singola parola…eccezionale!
Per quanto riguarda Baby2, il piccolo differisce notevolmente dalla sorella. A sei mesi e mezzo, il suo bisogno di comunicare ed essere al centro della nostra attenzione è assoluto. Adora essere baciato e coccolato (sorride ogni volta che lo si solleva e lo si prende in braccio mentre sua sorella neanche a piangere, alla sua stessa età). Inoltre, ha molta fretta di scoprire il mondo che lo circonda, perciò, al contrario della sorella alla sua età, e forse a causa dei problemi che ha avuto a tenere su la testa da solo - al poveretto pare incomprensibile quanto la stazza giochi a suo sfavore nel combattere la lentezza dei movimenti - si è focalizzato completamente sulla coordinazione occhio-mano. E' quindi perfettamente in grado di afferrare, tenere e manipolare qualsiasi oggetto alla sua portata, meglio se soffice e colorato. Adora qualsiasi gioco gli si faccia pendere di fronte ed è in grado di spendere un intero pomeriggio tentando di afferrarsi i piedi per mordicchiarli. 50 sviluppò abilità simili decisamente dopo.
D’altro canto la bimba era molto più indipendente a questa età, guardava i suoi cartoni preferiti con una certa qual selettività ed il suo unico interesse pareva essere il raggiungimento della piena padronanza del telecomando, caratteristica che, probabilmente, si è evoluta nella sua attuale passione per tutto ciò che sono computer, telefoni e hardware in genere. E' di oggi, tuttavia, la prima testimonianza ufficiale che l'era della testa penzoloni è al termine, anche per Baby2. E' infatti in grado di sollevarla e ruotarla da ambo le parti a piacere, specie se chiamato (distingue perfettamente il proprio nome).
In conclusione, le uniche cose che i bimbi sembrano condividere sono una vera passione per il cibo, il sudare come maialini ed una crescita rapida ed esponenziale. Sembrano dei piccoli titani rispetto ai coetanei ma la cosa non mi preoccupa, almeno non fin quando, alla fine, tocca spingere i passeggini per dei bei tratti sostenuti, tipo come qui al mare, dove la casa e la spiaggia distano assai. E vabbè, vorrà dire che comincerò a rimettermi in forma – ovviamente se si resiste al caldo, beninteso.
